Project Overview
Located on Purdue's North Central campus, this facility features a gymnasium, conference center, athletic offices, locker rooms and fitness center with cardio and weight equipment and an indoor running track. The complex accommodates student life activities, service learning and leadership centers, wellness programs and intramural and recreational programs. The university's basketball and volleyball teams play a portion of their games in the H.D. Kesling Gymnasium, where bleachers seat just over 1,500 fans.
Approach
As construction manager-agency, Berglund oversaw all construction activities. Our role included document management, quality control oversight and schedule oversight. Early in the project, we conducted budgeting exercises as the owner and architect worked toward final design documents. During these exercises, Berglund provided value engineering options that allowed Purdue to keep the project within budget without sacrificing program or quality of the building.
Outcomes
The building's architecture is articulated in two elements: student organizations, athletics and recreation to the north; conference center and lobby to the south. Students from with a wide range of interests are able to take advantage of the building's diverse features. Starting with a striking building entrance, the complex has transformed the student experience at Purdue Northwest by fostering the creation and enhancement of programs that facilitate engagement.
