Valparaiso Central
Heavilin Elementary School
Construction of a new 94,000 sqft elementary school on greenfield land, designed to accommodate 550 students from kindergarten through fifth grade.
Project Overview

Working alongside Gibraltar Design and Architecture, Berglund Construction was hired as general contractor to build a new $17 million elementary school in Valparaiso, IN. The 94,000-sqft school accommodates 550 students throughout its 35 classrooms, full-sized gymnasium and media center. It has four collaboration rooms for teachers to work with students and covered outdoor spaces where teachers can lead classes outside.

Approach

The school at 2450 Heavilin Road is part of a building and renovation project that will eventually encompass all of the district’s schools. The new elementary school — its newest building in more than two decades — is the first located south of U.S. 30, was completed just in time for a new school year.

The building project was funded by a referendum that passed in May 2015 with a two-thirds majority. A second referendum on the ballot, for operation expenses, passed as well.

I believe this school will serve our kids for years to come, I think this is something we can all be proud of in our community.”
