In early April 2023, Oak Park's oldest Catholic church, St. Edmund, faced an unexpected challenge when a violent storm caused significant damage to its historic structure. The storm led to the collapse of major sections of the church, particularly around the bell tower, forcing the community to adapt and respond swiftly.
The Damage
The storm's impact on St. Edmund was catastrophic. Large finial stones atop the bell tower were dislodged, causing extensive damage as they fell. In addition, several decorative crosses were also torn from their places, further compromising the structure. The bell tower parapet walls were left in a precarious state, necessitating immediate attention.
Immediate Response
In the wake of the storm, St. Edmund ownership took prompt action by roping off the affected area and relocating all services, including Easter celebrations, to alternate venues. To address the damage, Wiss, Janney, Elstner Associates (WJE) were contracted to investigate and formulate an immediate make-safe plan, followed by a comprehensive repair design report.
The make-safe plan involved securing the stone lodged in the attic with straps and reinforcing the undermined parapet wall of the bell tower. A wire loop was wrapped around the exterior of the bell tower to ensure stability until full repairs could be executed.
Restoration Efforts
Berglund Construction was chosen as the general contractor to address the safety concerns and initiate repairs. On October 4, subcontractor Jones & Cleary mobilized a crane to remove the stone from the attic. Following this, efforts were made to repair the damaged roof rafters and floor joists and make the building watertight. This was crucial as water intrusion had begun to damage the church's interior, including plasterwork, painted ceilings, gold leaf, and ornate woodwork.
Our team worked diligently to meet the phase one schedule set by the church's ownership. By completing all necessary make-safe items, they enabled the congregation to return and hold Christmas Mass in their beloved church.
Final Repairs and Restoration
This year, our team returned to carry out the final phase of repairs, focusing on masonry façade restoration and the replacement of the fallen stones. Using a monorail system, they successfully lifted and installed three finial stones, each nearly 7 feet tall and weighing around 1,000 pounds. This complex task was completed in just four days, showcasing the team's expertise and efficiency.
Additionally, three decorative crosses were reinstalled, and one was repaired, further restoring the church's historical integrity. With the project nearing completion, only roofing work remains before St. Edmund is fully restored to its former glory.
A Community United
The restoration of St. Edmund Church stands as a testament to the resilience and spirit of the Oak Park community. Faced with sudden destruction, the swift and coordinated response from our collective team including the church's ownership, WJE, and Jones & Cleary exemplifies the power of collaboration and dedication. As the church prepares to open its doors once more, it symbolizes not just a return to normalcy, but a celebration of perseverance and unity.
St. Edmund, with its rich history and architectural beauty, continues to be a cornerstone of Oak Park. Its restoration ensures that future generations will have a place to gather, worship, and find solace, embodying the enduring strength of faith and community.
