Skydeck Chicago at Willis Tower is among the top-10 tourist spots for 2019.
Skydeck Chicago has reached new heights in popularity with TripAdvisors users. The 1,353-foot-high observation deck in the city's tallest skyscraper ranks among the world's most sought-after tourist attractions in TripAdvisor's massive portfolio of bookable experiences, according to the travel website's recently released data for 2019. The Skydeck is one of three U.S. sites on TripAdvisor's Top 10 list of attractions.
TripAdvisor declares "no trip to Chicago is complete without a visit to Skydeck Chicago." Attracting about 1.7 million visitors a year, the Skydeck is poised to become even more popular in the near future, when construction work wraps up on five-story dining, retail, and entertainment space at the base of Willis Tower.
Berglund Construction played a key role in making the Skydeck the tourist attraction it is today. In 2009, Berglund was selected to provide construction services for the installation of the new Skydeck Ledge at Willis Tower. The new glass ledges were installed on the 103rd floor into the curtain wall facade of Chicago's tallest building. These four pods extend 4’-4” from the façade and are fully retractable. Offering views down 1,353 feet to South Wacker Drive, each of the pods have five sides hanging from steel trusses projecting from the ceiling out into free air creating the illusion of “Walking on Air.” The glass ledges are made of three layers of tempered glass bonded together and can withstand 10,000 lbs.
