Richard Edwards Elementary School is officially open! On students’ first day back from summer vacation, the school debuted its new three-story, 50,000 sq. ft. addition. The Public Buildings Commission of Chicago managed the project, STL Architects served as architect and Berglund served as the Construction Manager at-risk. The addition houses a new lunchroom / multipurpose room, kitchen and 24 new classrooms. Berglund also removed and installed a new playground for the students as well as a new turf play field.
In attendance for the ribbon cutting were guests such as Mayor Rahm Emanuel, PBC Executive Director Felicia S. Davis, Alderman Edward M. Burke, CPS Chief Executive Officer Forrest Claypool, CPS Chief Education Officer Janice Jackson and Richard Edwards Principal Judy Sauri. They all participated in the cutting of the ribbon, officially welcoming the students to their new and improved school. This addition is able to offer the students of Richard Edwards Elementary more space and resources to excel in their rigorous academic programs including the fine arts where the school emphasizes a global perspective.
