Ivy Tech Community College celebrated a major milestone with the completion of a transformative $12 million renovation project at its Lake County campus in East Chicago. The grand reopening, marked by a festive ribbon-cutting ceremony, was attended by Ivy Tech leaders, local officials, and community members, highlighting the campus's renewed commitment to accessible education and community engagement.
The renovations will impact 48,000 assignable square feet of classroom, lab, and restroom areas, contributing to a gross building square footage of 106,470 dedicated to essential infrastructure components.
The extensive renovations include a wide array of upgrades designed to enhance both functionality and aesthetics, such as:
- Modernized Learning Spaces: The project includes renovations to instructional and lab areas, specifically targeting advanced manufacturing and robotics. New classroom spaces for welding and areas designed for student collaboration will foster hands-on learning and teamwork.
- Infrastructure Enhancements: Significant upgrades to lighting, windows, HVAC systems, and fire suppression systems will create a modern and safe environment. The project also includes the replacement of overhead doors and restroom adjustments, ensuring accessibility for all users.
- Inviting Atmosphere: The lobby has been reimagined with a two-story ceiling, creating an inviting space for students. An upstairs concourse will serve as a vibrant gathering area, complete with new study pods—soundproof booths for individual work—and a dedicated space for Ivy+ Career Link, the college's career development department.
- Visibility Improvements: The incorporation of more interior windows will enhance visibility into the industrial and technical labs, promoting transparency and collaboration among students.
As stated by Chancellor Marcos Rodriguez Jr., "The renovation not only transformed the physical appearance of our campus here, but it's also created a more functional, accessible, and inspiring space that reflects the innovative spirit of Ivy Tech." Ivy Tech President, Sue Ellspermann, echoed this sentiment, stating, "The investment we celebrate today has transformed this East Chicago facility into a modern, welcoming environment."
As the Ivy Tech Lake County campus moves forward with its new look and improved functionality, it stands as a vital educational resource, empowering students and the broader community for years to come. We, Berglund Construction, are excited to play a pivotal role in this initiative, helping to shape the future of education in the region and providing students with the tools they need to succeed in their careers.
