It is always an honor to restore one of our city’s most iconic buildings. Our restoration division worked alongside Amtrak, CBRE, Goettsch Partners, ESD (Environmental Systems Design, Inc.), Klein & Hoffman, and CharterSills to bring portions of Chicago’s Union Station back to life. Previously ruined by a fire, and after remaining unoccupied for many years, our team restored the facade, replicated historic monumental windows, installed new terrazzo, and built a new mezzanine level. The space now opens to the Great Hall which Berglund performed extensive restoration several years prior. The scope included plaster repairs, replication painting, new and replication lighting, restoration of the historic skylight, installation of new high-performance skylight, roofing and masonry repairs. During restoration, the Great Hall remained fully functional to the station’s users.
This Fall, Chicago Union Station will be presented with the 2021 Landmarks Illinois The Richard H. Driehaus Foundation Preservation Award for Restoration, inclusive of work completed over the last decade.
