The South Side Community Art Center (SSCAC), recognized as the nation’s oldest continuously operating, independently run Black arts institution, is set to undergo a major rehabilitation and expansion project. Berglund Construction is proud to join Brown & Momen, Inc. as part of the joint venture leading the construction efforts. The development team also includes architects from Future Firm and wrkSHäp | kiloWatt (historic preservation), with guidance from URBAN ReSOLVE as the development advisor. The team brings its local expertise and a shared commitment to enhancing this landmark institution while honoring its historic significance.
With a mission to support and elevate Black artists at every stage of their careers, SSCAC’s expansion will allow for more exhibitions, workshops, and community engagement opportunities, enhancing its role as a vital cultural hub. The total cost of the addition and rehabilitation is estimated at $15 million.
This expansion will add over 10,000 square feet of space, increasing SSCAC’s capacity by a remarkable 398%. The improvements will also ensure the space is fully accessible, meeting modern standards for visitors with disabilities. Once completed, the facility will be equipped to offer more exhibitions, educational programs, and research opportunities, all aimed to create the connection between artists, the community, and the broader arts world.
Construction will begin this year, with the full expansion and rehabilitation scheduled for completion in late 2026.
The design approach for the new addition blends respect for SSCAC’s historic character with innovative upgrades that meet the needs of the modern-day arts community. The addition at the rear of the building will complement the Center’s iconic façade, creating a harmonious blend of past and future. Sustainable features, including a geothermal well field and solar-ready roof, will help achieve LEED Silver certification, showcasing SSCAC’s dedication to environmental responsibility.
